The Asprey firm was established in 1781 in Mitcham, South London, where William Asprey established a silk printing business. William's son Charles and his grandson, also Charles, expanded the business into the metallic arts. During the early 20th century, the firm rose to fame for its jewellery and received royal patronage. During this time its international fame grew as foreign royalty and celebrities flocked to Asprey for customised, exclusive luxury items.

Asprey employed the finest craftsmen, including Ernest Betjeman, one of the most highly regarded designers of his day. The coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953 occasioned the Asprey Coronation Year Gold Collection which featured an 18-carat gold dessert, coffee and liqueur service weighing almost 27 pounds. The firm continued to produce exceptional jewellery and precious items, such as this unusual clock from the late 1980s, created by skilled craftsmen in Asprey's signature style, using the finest gems.
